"History of the Church Seal: War, Peace, and Visual Theology" with Andrew Bolton
April 6th 1917 was also Good Friday. On this day the USA entered World War I, a war that was promised to be the war to end all wars. Up to this time the church seal had been used mainly as a seal for legal document from 1874, but in the 1920s after WWI, President F. M. Smith popularised the church seal through use on letter heads, Herald House books, and also in our chapels. It thus became the church’s logo, altered our consciousness, and expressed our mission – peaceable Zion. The church seal functions as “visual theology” in the life of Community of Christ retelling Isaiah 11:1-10. This presentation tells the story of our greatly beloved symbol using art, color, and seal designs historically and internationally.
