"Sleeping Sickness, Resignation Syndrome, Jumping Frenchmen of Maine, Havana Syndrome" feat. LLC Member Ruth Guyer Levy, Ph.D. - 5th Annual Celebrate Ourselves
“5th Annual Celebrate Ourselves” Honors Presenter and LLC Member Ruth Levy Guyer, Ph.D.

We at LLC are extraordinary. We are seniors, and here we are – still growing, still learning and still contributing to society. This year, we are celebrating Ruth Levy Guyer, Ph.D in Immunology, teacher, author of "A Life Interrupted: The Long Night of Marjorie Day,” and a member of LLC and coordinator of several courses.

Topic: “Sleeping Sickness, Resignation Syndrome, Jumping Frenchmen of Maine, Havana Syndrome”

Puzzling new diseases have always piqued our interest – where did they come from, what made them show up when they did, how do we treat and get rid of them? Over the past century, many previously unseen diseases popped up and most were “solved”… but not all of them. Ruth Levy Guyer will talk about “emergent diseases” and her interest in one medical mystery that surfaced more than 100 years ago and, to this day, remains enigmatic.

Currently, Ruth Levy Guyer is a co-director of the Arts and Ethics in Palliative Care program at the Brown Hospice and a member of the Miriam Ethics Committee. She has taught courses in bioethics, medical ethics, environmental ethics, AIDS, and writing at Haverford College. She also taught writing workshops and electives in nonfiction and science in the Graduate Writing Program at Johns Hopkins University.
