In recognition of the 250th Anniversary of Beethoven's birth in 2020, The Wagner Society of Northern California welcomes Professor Katherine Syer to our webinar series. In her presentation Professor Syer will survey the contours and context of Wagner's prose contribution to the 1870 Beethoven Centennial. As has often been noted, Beethoven is not so much the focus of his eponymously titled essay, but serves more as a means by which Wagner articulates his own artistic views. Schopenhauer, too, comes into play in this way. In this presentation, we will concentrate on the ways core concepts in Wagner's essay "Beethoven" provide insight into aesthetic and political concerns spanning from the artist's formative years through to Tristan und Isolde.
