The IEA is delighted to invite you to attend our upcoming webinar on “Prohibition and the Pandemic,” where we will be joined by guest speaker’s Dr Jeffrey Miron, Dr H. Westley Clark. and Dr Jamie Whyte. The webinar will be taking place from 5-6pm on Thursday 21st May and the IEA’s Head of Lifestyle Economics, Christopher Snowdon, will be chairing the discussion.
Governments around the world have adopted a range of measures on alcohol, tobacco and e-cigarettes in response to the pandemic. While some countries have defined alcohol shops and tobacconists as essential services, others have introduced full prohibition. History shows that prohibitionists never allow a crisis to go to waste, so has the pandemic provided a vital cover and opportunity for nanny statists to push through their agenda? Are any of the new restrictions justified and are they likely to remain in place after the crisis has passed?
To discuss this, we will be joined by an esteemed panel of experts. Dr Jeffrey Miron is the Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Economics at Harvard University, one of the world’s leading experts on prohibition. Our second panellist will be Dr H. Westley Clark who is the Dean’s Executive Professor of Public Health at Santa Clara University. Finally, we will be joined by classical liberal academic, political author, and the IEA's former Academic and Research Director Dr Jamie Whyte.
