Join transparency and accountability experts for a lively panel discussion on the importance of the Freedom of Information Act as a mechanism to defend our democracy and empower the public. For over 50 years, FOIA has secured the public’s right to know and has proven to be an invaluable tool to civil society advocates, journalists, and individuals. Presenters will discuss the overall records request process and how records are withheld from the public. Panelists will also guide participants through the byzantine processes that frustrate the public's right to a transparent government. Finally, they will highlight some of the recommendations to strengthen FOIA mapped out in Accountability 2021 for the Biden administration and Congress.
