Racism, Bias, Microaggressions and Allyship in Health Care: Using Narratives to Teach Health Professionals
Structural racism is considered the most influential of all types of racism and discrimination that exists in America and health care is not exempt. It is ingrained in customs and practices that manifest in health care as discrimination, bias and microaggressions to those that work in this setting. Talking about racism is difficult and challenging due to the pain and strong emotions that surround it. Creating a respectful, interactive, and safe place to have these conversations and highlighting opportunities for antiracist intervention is paramount. Narratives can be utilized to bring authentic stories and viewpoints to facilitate these conversations and learning.
