Land Use Law Update
This session will summarize recent case law with respect to land use law. After attending this session, participants will be able to : (1) identify current legal issues; (2) describe how recent cases may apply to local ordinances and issues; and (3) collaborate with the local government attorney to develop legally defensible local government land use policies and ordinances.

Speaker Information :

Jared Anderson, J.D., AICP received a B.A. in Geography with a minor in Economics from West Virginia University where he was a member of the WVU Mens' Tennis Team. After graduating, he worked as a GIS specialist for an engineering firm in Virginia. Later, he moved out west to attend the University of Hawaii, where he obtained a Master Of Urban and Regional Planning. In 2007, he moved back to Virginia to become the Planning Director for the Town of Chincoteague. While there, he was responsible for the day-to-day planning activities, including a complete revision of the town's comprehensive plan. Most recently, he obtained a J.D. from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C.

Jesse J. Richardson, Jr. is a Professor of Law and the Lead Land Use Attorney at the Land Use and Sustainable Development Law Clinic at the West Virginia University College of Law. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Agricultural and Applied Economics from Virginia Tech and a J.D. from the University of Virginia. Mr. Richardson formerly served as an Associate Professor at Virginia Tech in the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning. He has worked on land use issues across the country. His research and teaching focus on land use law and water law.
