Measuring the Impact of Palliative Care - Guided by Lustbader, et al.’s study, “The Impact of a Home-Based Palliative Care Program in an Accountable Care Organization”
Measuring the overall value and return on investment for palliative care services is as important as it is challenging. Without the ability to measure value in agreed-upon terms, policy-makers, health plan executives and administrators find it difficult to design, evaluate, or even fund needed programs to support those with serious illness.
The Lustbader, et al. study offers an evaluation of home-based palliative care and its association with lowered Medicare costs, fewer admissions, and increase in hospice utilization.
