Launching the New Seed Information Database with the International Network for Seed-based Restoration

Description

The new SID provides user-friendly access to essential information on seed weight, storage behavior, germination requirements, and other traits. The database currently hosts 182,232 records from 54,803 plant taxa. All records contained within the database are publicly available under the terms of the Creative Commons CC BY 2.0.

SID, originally developed and maintained by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (RBGK), was slated to be discontinued due to an agency compliance issue. Upon hearing about the impending closure, SER’s INSR and the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew worked together to ensure the preservation of this critical database, which serves as an invaluable and reliable source of information on native seeds for restoration practitioners across the globe.

John B. Dickie (@Royal Botanic Gardens KEW) As Research Leader and Assistant Head of the Collections Department, John manages and leads both the Seed Collections section, based at the Millennium Seed Bank, and the Laboratory-based Collections section, based largely in the Jodrell Laboratory. He is responsible for the quality of the collections themselves, which consist of living seeds, DNA and microscope slides of leaves, wood, pollen and flowers; and the quality and availability of the data associated with them. The utility of the collections for research depends on maximising their availability, especially by digitising them wherever practicable and integrating them and their associated data with all of Kew’s collections. Fiona Hay (@Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University) Fiona Hay is a senior researcher at the Department of Agroecology, as well as editor-in-chief of the journal Seed Science and Technology, published by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). Chid Gilovitz I’m a botanist and plant biologist working in Western Australia. My main interests are evolution, plant taxonomy and phylogenetics, and ethnobotany; spatial ecology, web development, and GIS; and photography. I work as a consultant botanist and build Biodata, a data management system for field ecologists and environmental scientists. In my professional life, I specialise in the use of open source and web-based technologies for GIS and botanical data management and analysis. Mostly, I like walking around in the bush, and looking at the plants, rocks, and animals that I find; I am continually fascinated by the ways that nature solves problems, and always re-enlivened by time in wild places. When I’m indoors, I’m usually writing something in Python using the Django web framework, playing with novel data analysis or visualisation methods, or editing photos from my last adventure. Otherwise, I’ll be somewhere out bush. My principle area of botanical expertise is Western Australia, where I Robert Turner (Senior Technical Leader @Royal Botanic Gardens - KEW) My role as data architect for the Biodiversity Informatics and Spatial Analysis teams involves leading the development and implementation of data models and standards for science at Kew. With the Biodiversity Informatics team, I am also leading on agile methodologies for complex software development projects.
