ERA WG e-seminar series #33 - organised by the DIABESITY Working Group
Role of Hidden Vascular Lesions in Diabetic Nephropathy

In patients with type 2 diabetes, the incidence and prevalence of cardiovascular events are particularly high. Diabetes is per se an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The strength of the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease is so solid that some researchers have considered both entities equal. This association can be relevant also for the nephrologist. However, the role of intra-renal vascular disease in patients with diabetes and its role in renal function loss in the diabetic population has been seldom analysed. Considering the high prevalence of atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes, its presence in the renal tissue may be expected to be high and then contribute to renal dysfunction. In the e-seminar data on vascular damage in renal biopsies in diabetic patients will be discussed. Also, data from the European Nephrectomy Biobank (ENBiBA) project will be presented. ENBiBA is an initiative of the Diabesity Working Group of the ERA. In this project, the prevalence of vascular damage in patients with diabetes and its relation with other morphological lesions as well as with the level of albuminuria/proteinuria have been analysed.
