Opportunities for research libraries and scholarly societies to support community-building among early career researchers in the social sciences
A recent paper by scholarly communication researcher Marcel LaFlamme, published by the Association of Research Libraries, presents findings and recommendations from semi-structured interviews with early career researchers from Canada and the United States in the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, linguistics, psychology, science and technology studies, and sociology. Drawing on these interviews, Dr. LaFlamme explores the changing nature of scholarly affiliation with respect to early career researchers’ memberships in scholarly societies and participation in a range of informal and emerging networks. In times of profound public health, financial, and social disruption in the academy, this paper offers valuable guidance to research libraries and scholarly societies in supporting the needs of early career researchers as we collectively navigate toward more open, inclusive, and equitable futures.
