Little Free Library Unbound - Chapter 1: Introducing Read in Color

Little Free Library Unbound is a digital event series connecting stewards, patrons, supporters, authors, publishers, the Little Free Library organization staff, and our national board via monthly webinars on book-related topics. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions for our guest panelists, and our moderator will lead a discussion alongside the Q&A.

Chapter 1

Our first chapter of Unbound will introduce our Read in Color program and feature guest panelists who have been partners in our Read in Color launch. Our national board chair, Anita Merina, will moderate Q&A sessions with Tameka Fryer Brown, author of Brown Baby Lullaby and My Cold Plum Lemon Pie Bluesy Mood, as well Dionne Sims of Black Garnet Books.

During her tenure, Anita helped create NEA’s Books Across America school library grants and partnerships with Youth Service America, First Book, Heart of America Foundation, Screen Actors Guild Foundation, Library of Congress, and We Need Diverse Books. Through her role, she also gained valuable experience in fundraising, celebrity and influencer outreach, community organizing, and strategic partnerships. Outside of literacy, she is a full-time glass artist and enjoys tennis and gardening. Dionne Sims (Owner @Black Garnet Books) Dionne Simms is the founder of Black Garnet Books, the only Black-owned bookstore in Minnesota. She is a queer, Minnesota designer who used her love of storytelling and advocacy to dive into a career in User Experience Design. Still, her heart and passion stayed closely tied to reading, writing, and community-building. Black Garnet Books is a Black, woman-owned bookstore located in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, primarily stocking Adult and YA contemporary literature by Black and racially-diverse authors. Dionne is incredibly excited to introduce everyone to underrepresented voices and stories, new and old, that support and affirm the cultures they're connected to. Tameka Fryer Brown (Author, Brown Baby Lullaby ) Tameka Fryer Brown is an award-winning picture book author. Her titles include AROUND OUR WAY ON NEIGHBORS’ DAY (Abrams BFYR) and MY COLD PLUM LEMON PIE BLUESY MOOD (Viking Children’s/PRH), which was lauded as a Charlotte Zolotow Honor Book, a Bank Street College Best Book, a CCBC Choices Best Book, an Abilene ISD Mockingbird Award nominee, a SIBA Book Award nominee, a Star of the North Picture Book Award nominee, and one of NYPL’s 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing. Her work is also featured in the much-heralded anthology, WE RISE, WE RESIST, WE RAISE OUR VOICES (Crown BFYR/Just Us Books).
