TUESDAY 19 MAY - START - 7pm
Health Campaigns Together and Keep Our NHS Public are excited that you will be able to hear from our international friends from Europe, Canada, the USA and the UK, and to help us learn from the intense and tragic, but very different, experiences of how health services and politicians have responded to the Covid19 pandemic in other countries.
Natalie Mehra - Ontario health coalition
Adam Gaffney - Physicians for a National Health Programme USA
Baba Aye - Public Services International
John Lister - Health Campaigns Together and Keep Our NHS Public
This discussion aims to share the experiences and the lessons learned by campaigners and trade unions in North America, the UK, Europe and beyond as we fight the impact of the coronavirus. From the US, Physicians for a National Health Program has for decades been leading the fight for an end to commercial health care, and for universal access to health care – now widely supported as "Medicare for All". In Canada, which has tax-funded health care, the Ontario Health Coalition has been having successes campaigning with unions and communities, and is now fighting to stop the for-profit privatization of long-term and chronic care. The global alliance of public sector unions, Public Service International, has been supporting campaigns and initiatives by its affiliates in Europe, Asia and Africa. In Britain the battle to secure adequate PPE for health and social care staff is also linked with the fight to bring care homes into public ownership and a National Care Service.
