Topic
Indigenous Leadership + Natural Climate Solutions
Description
Achieving Canada’s climate goals require Natural Climate Solutions. Indigenous communities in Canada are leading the implementation of Natural Climate Solutions that harness Indigenous values, ways of being, and governance, while creating real carbon emissions reductions that can contribute to Canada’s climate targets. This webinar, provided by Wahkohtowin Development and Ecotrust Canada, will focus on the ways that Indigenous communities are leading Natural Climate Solutions and how governments in Canada can support this leadership. We will share a short presentation, Q&A panel discussion, and end with questions from the audience.
The federal government’s new climate plan, A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy, includes a Natural Climate Solutions Fund as a critical component to climate action. Wahkohtowin Development and Ecotrust Canada prove how Indigenous-led Natural Climate Solutions align with Indigenous values of land stewardship through improved forest management and conservation – enabling job creation and self-governance by Indigenous communities. Natural Climate Solutions provide opportunities to harness carbon value on the landscape, while Indigenous communities create alternative economies and land governance practices.

David Flood (General Manager @Wahkohtowin Development GP Inc.) Over the past 15 years, David has operated in a variety of service, management and advisory capacities either directly for an employer or through his consultancy DLF Sustainable Development Services. In all projects, David believes the key drivers to success have been identifying where collaboration, coexistence, and consensus can be achieved amongst the parties. The main development focus in his role as General Manager with Wahkhotwoin has been on supporting business development and participation in the Forest Sector of Ontario on behalf of its owner First Nations. Recently, David became a Board member for FSC Canada and acts as Chair for a second year as the new National Standard is now released. To advance reconciliation and grow awareness for Indigenous competency and knowledge systems, David has also re-qualified and is a Registered Professional Forester with the Ontario Professional Foresters Association.
