We all know the routine. Association boards and their leadership teams come together on a periodic basis to formulate strategy, then armed with good intentions, ask their program units, functional teams and PMO to work together to execute the initiatives the leadership team has chosen. Unfortunately, all too often a gap in understanding and performance occurs for those charged with implementing the initiatives flowing from the strategy. This gap invariably translates into unwanted costs, lost opportunities and ultimately failure to execute. When a failure at execution occurs, the lost value resulting is highly significant regardless of sector.
