The Promotion of Global Health Competencies: Moshi, Tanzania – South Dakota Rural Community Nursing Project

The role of the nurse throughout the world has never been more important. Due to advances in technology, increased migration, and greater inequalities in access and quality of health services, nursing practice requires new competencies in global healthcare. Global health is grounded in global cooperation, population and individual health, and health equity .The increased complexity of healthcare and a growing worldwide elderly population require advanced collaboration, clinical judgment, and cultural awareness across geographical boundaries. An effective strategy for integration of global interaction includes the implementation of collaborative clinical and exchange projects. This presentation will address outcomes of a collaboration between students from the Kibosho School of Nursing in Moshi, Tanzania and the University of South Dakota.

Through the exchange, students from two unique rural areas had an opportunity to exchange ideas, promote understanding of different health systems and share learning. Students used technology to connect, share nursing practices, and discuss the importance of the role of the nurse. In addition, students presented similarities and differences in nursing care for the vulnerable elderly population in Tanzania, Africa and South Dakota. Through the implementation of this initiative, students were able to learn and practice critical skills in the area of rural healthcare, develop cultural awareness, and address a priority international health need in the care of the elderly.
