Using her theatrical background, shalan brings Mi’kmaw stories to a new generation of listeners, as well as recounting personally crafted narratives that follow Mi’kmaw storying custom. Her first book of poetry, Generations Re-merging, was published by Gaspereau Press (2014) and her second book, Elapultiek, was published by Pottersfield Press (2019). Her second collection of poetry, Waking Ground, was published by Gaspereau Press (2020) and was recently shortlisted for the J.M. Abrahms Atlantic Poetry Award, the Maxine Tynes Nova Scotia Poetry Award, the 2021 Pat Lowther Memorial Award and the 2021 Indigenous Voices Award for Poetry in English. shalan lives in her home territory of Kespukwitk (southwest Nova Scotia) with her family in their community of L’sətkuk (Bear River First Nation), where she is currently writing, creating and finishing a PhD in Mi’kmaw language. Charlie Petch Charlie Petch (they/them, he/him) is a disabled/queer/transmasculine multidisciplinary artist who resides in Tkaronto/Toronto. A poet, playwright, librettist, musician, lighting designer, and host, Petch was the 2017 Poet of Honour for SpeakNorth national festival, winner of the Golden Beret lifetime achievement in spoken word with The League of Canadian Poets (2020), and founder of Hot Damn it’s a Queer Slam. Petch is a touring performer, as well as a mentor and workshop facilitator. They are launching “Daughter of Geppetto,” a multimedia/dance/music/performance poetry piece with Wind in the Leaves in April 2022, launched their full-length poetry collection Why I Was Late with Brick Books which got a “Best of 2021” from The Walrus, and filmed their libretto “Medusa’s Children” with Opera QTO. They have been featured on CBC’s Q, the Toronto International Festival of Authors, and were long-listed for the CBC Poetry Prize in 2021. Jen Mustapha Jen Mustapha is an Asian-Canadian writer, artist, and politics professor. She writes academically and creatively on questions of security and belonging. Jen's poem-cycle, 'City Souvenirs,' was recent runner-up winner in the 2021 Eden Mills Fringe contest. Her poem 'When this is over,' was an honourable mention in TNQs 2021 Occasional Poem Contest and was published in their recent Fall issue. She lives on Treaty 6 territory with her husband, daughter, and two unruly cats.
