Join UNITE-LA, in partnership with leading business organizations in the region,
for an exciting conversation with California State Superintendent of Public
Instruction, Tony Thurmond, to discuss our state’s efforts to strengthen
multilingual education for students.
It is estimated that 65 percent of all children in California age 5 and under
will enter the K-12 system speaking a language other than English. When
supported through much needed state budget investments and new policies,
these children with rich, cultural diversity will contribute to California’s diverse
population and help California remain one of the top global economies in the world.
Superintendent Thurmond will discuss California’s efforts to support multilingualism
for students while embracing diversity and fortifying our ability to remain a global
economy. We will address the English Learner/Dual Language Learner teacher shortage
and ways we can build a diverse educator workforce for our early care and K-12
education system. We will also explore the role families, communities, universities,
employers and businesses can play in this effort.
As we continue to invest in our children and youth, we have a unique opportunity to
develop bold ideas and forward-thinking actions that will change our education system
to help create an equitable economy for everyone.
