First Do No Harm: Overcoming Centuries of Legitimate Medical Mistrust...
For over three centuries, medical institutions throughout this country have disproportionately abused Black and Brown people in various ways; ranging from benign neglect to outright experimentation, disfiguration, and murder. While social media would be non-existent across the majority of this abuse, people still managed to spread the news; creating deep-seated mistrust towards the institution of medicine. From syphilis in Tuskegee to lead in Flint’s water, Black and Brown people have valid reasons for being skeptical of historically white institutions of health and safety. This workshop explores both the history and contemporary manifestations while placing science/medicine squarely within this legacy.
