ATNI Policy Fix: How do we drive accountability for food industry lobbying?

Food and beverage (F&B) industry resistance to urgently-needed policy measures to address malnutrition has been observed repeatedly by civil society, academia, and UN agencies; a growing number of voices call for industry to be excluded from the policymaking process altogether.

In December 2022, ATNI published its first Spotlight on Lobbying benchmark, assessing the 25 largest F&B companies’ internal corporate practices regarding engagement with policymakers, political spending, and membership of trade associations. It found that there is significant room for improvement across the board, especially regarding voluntary disclosure and commitment to lobbying in the public health interest.

As attention on this subject mounts, it is important to reflect on what we do and don’t know, critically examine our assumptions, and determine what we can do differently to collectively drive accountability for F&B industry lobbying against public health measures.
