Deaf Centered Approaches to Student's Success

Description

Often, deaf and hard-of-hearing people struggle to remain engaged in interpreted sessions. This is on top of the challenge of obtaining, processing, and retaining information in real time when delivered by interpreters. Solutions are needed to increase the engagement of deaf and hard-of-hearing participants in interpreted sessions.

The Deaf Centered Interpreting model results from an ongoing effort to improve access and participation for deaf and hard-of-hearing participants in interpreted sessions. This presentation will focus on the changing view of the delivery model from merely providing access to increasing the quality of interpreting work by removing barriers that have made it difficult for deaf and hard-of-hearing participants to engage fully in interpreted sessions.

This session aims to answer the question, "How can interpreting become more deaf-centered?" Join Thomas Holcomb from Ohlone College and Aundrea Love as they walk us through the concept of “deaf-centered” interpreting in practice, using examples from the classroom.

Holcomb is Professor at Ohlone College in Fremont, California where he teaches courses related to Deaf Culture, Deaf Education and Interpreting to both deaf and hearing students. Previously, he taught at San Jose State University and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology. Tom’s academic credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Gallaudet University, a Master’s degree in Career and Human Resources Development from Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Rochester. His published works comprise of several books. He is well known for his dynamic presentation style, which he uses to bring together deaf and hearing cultures. He has presented in 45 states and numerous countries such as Austria, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Japan, Sweden, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. Aundrea Love (NIC @University of California, Santa Barbara) Aundrea Love, NIC is a 1997 graduate of Ohlone College’s Interpreter Preparation Program. She got her Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication with an Interpersonal Communication option from Cal State Hayward in 2001. In addition to community interpreting, she worked at Ohlone College for more than twenty years as a contractor, then a staff interpreter with students, and ultimately as District Interpreter/Coordinator supporting employees of the college. Currently, Aundrea works at the University of California, Santa Barbara as a staff interpreter.
