As couples therapists we are often called upon to be competent both as generalists and specialists. Partners who enter couples therapy are increasingly wanting their therapist to be competent in addressing and navigating diverse identities and intersectionalities such as race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, religion and partnership types. Most couples therapy trainings build general skills and techniques in addressing relational distress or specific clinical co-morbidities such as domestic violence, affairs, addictions, or trauma but does not adequately prepare couples therapists to skillfully help their relational clients navigate diverse and intersectional identities.
In this webinar, Dr. Vagdevi Meunier, PsyD will focus specifically on identity development, impact of intersectional identities on relationship distress and health, and how to address and help clients integrate their experiences with their relationship skills. Through the use of case material, video clips, and lecture we will ground our discussions in clinical practice and identify specific techniques for helping partners dialogue about and increase their personal and relational health and wellness.
