Counseling in Tobacco Treatment: The Intersection of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and the Transtheoretical Model of Change
Presented by: Edward Perka Jr. CASAC, ICADC, NCTTP
The two main components of effective Tobacco Use Disorder treatment are Counseling and Medication. This webinar will focus on the counseling aspect of treatment, specifically, when and where (and why) to employ strategies tailored to the current needs and goals of the patient.
To accomplish this, we will look at the intersection of Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and the Transtheoretical Model of Change.
The goal of counseling is to engage the patient. Engagement means that a client is involved in a process where his or her own needs, preferences, and abilities are balanced with your professional interventions to create a positive outcome.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the Transtheoretical Model Stages of Change
2. Describe the principles of Motivational Interviewing
3. Describe the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
4. Understand how the strategies of Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be shifted to mirror the patient’s process of change
