In the Gloaming: The Paintings of Atkinson Grimshaw
Atkinson Grimshaw was a Victorian painter of nocturnes and moonlight. A painter of desolate gas-lit streets, misty harbours and solitary figures under shimmering twilight. He captured scenes of his native Yorkshire and imbued them with a moody beauty.

Atkinson Grimshaw’s early work demonstrates the influence of Pre-Raphaelites in its ‘truth to nature’ approach. But towards the end of the 19th Century urban industrial scenes became his hallmark. He developed a distinct and experimental style inspired by his fascination with the effects of light, and the relatively new art of photography.

Come and explore the beautiful works of this railway-clerk-turned-painter whose works now command six figure sums!
