Description
**Este seminario contará con traducción simultánea inglés-español**. Join us on Thursday October 24 for a webinar that will link the protection needs of environmental defenders with the United Nations COP16 Biodiversity conference now underway in Colombia, the Binding Treaty negotiations in December and the COP30 climate talks in Brazil next year. Speakers will be Javier Garate (Global Witness), Berenice Celeita (Nomadesc) and Yannick Wild (PBI-Switzerland) with special introductory comments from UN Special Rapporteur Michel Forst. In his opening message to COP16, UN Secretary General António Guterres said: “Our task at this COP is to move from words to deeds.” Those words have included the pledge of “the full protection of environmental human rights defenders.” With a UN report released last week that says 248 Colombian environmental leaders have been murdered since 2016, Juliette De Rivero, the UN’s human rights representative in Colombia, commented that COP16 is “an opportunity to improve the protection of environmental defenders.” Are COP processes up to this task? Can the situation for environmental defenders be improved? Join us on Thursday for this discussion.
