With USA TODAY reporters across the country, the Documenting COVID-19 project has launched a project to highlight the undercounting of COVID deaths and the reasons why an estimated 20% to 30% of death certificates have significant errors.
Our first story as part of the project was published Thursday here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2021/12/09/covid-death-count-america-cdc/6435124001/
In this webinar, we'll talk about the death reporting process in different states; CDC data collection on deaths and the issues with those counts; and excess death modeling by academic teams, which helps show the pandemic's true death toll.
More than 100 state-level data points from the new CDC has been compiled, cleaned and made searchable and downloadable here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xxHD6bEySvj5WVZsJA08oNYNp29dEZjlbyStuSLhJNI/edit?usp=sharing
We've also created a callout form for the public to reach out with stories and tips here: https://bit.ly/COVIDcounting
This webinar is free, open to the public and will be recorded. Registration is required. For more information, visit muckrock.com and documentingcovid19.io
