Join the Cape Breton Partnership and Nova Scotia Community College for the fifth and FINAL Ocean Farming session in the FREE five-part series: Ocean Farming – Innovation & Readiness on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 1 p.m. via Zoom.
The session will be moderated by Tim Menke and Gene Kersey, Co-founders and Directors of Arc of the Coast Eastern Cape Breton Co-operative Alliance, who both possess extensive knowledge of the sector in the region. Presenting panelists include Charlene LeBlanc, Aquaculture Consultant & Owner of LeBlanc Seeded Lines, Ernie Porter, Owner of Town Point Consulting, and Bailey Moritz, Program Coordinator, World Wildlife Fund.
This event is part of the Cape Breton Partnership's and Nova Scotia Community College’s Ocean Farming Series, bringing our local Cape Breton - Unama'ki business community together to hear from industry experts on a range of topics important to the success and growth of the ocean farming sector on Cape Breton Island. A business owner since the age of 23, she took on the challenge of building Canada’s first Aquaculture Development Area, and more recently she created a consulting company as well as LeBlanc Seeded Lines, both to assist the growing sectors aquaculture. Bailey Moritz (Program Coordinator @World Wildlife Fund) Bailey is the Program Officer for seaweed and shellfish farming at WWF-US working to advance the seaweed industry through directed funding, convening stakeholders, and strategy development on increasing market demand and social license. Previously, she helped run a commercial kelp nursery in Maine and has spent time on seaweed farms in Madagascar and Belize. She is now based back in her childhood home, Seattle. “Lately I’ve learned how influential local non-profits can be in driving the conversation on aquaculture and I’m thinking about how we can bring more non-profits on board to voice their active support. Ernie Porter P.Eng (President @Town Point Consulting) Born in New Glasgow NS in 1957. Married Jane in 1985, we have two sons in their early 30’s. BSc from Acadia in 1978, BEng from NSTC in 1980. Joined Lindsay Construction as site engineer in 1980. Became a partner in the firm in 1987. Served as President from 1997 to 2009, then Chairman until retirement in 2014. Established Town Point Consulting Inc in 2014 to provide construction consulting services. In 2018 this firm, operating as Town Point Oysters, began to pursue oyster aquaculture marine site leases in Antigonish Harbour which remain under review. We have designed and constructed a land-based oyster seed nursery that is operational. In 2019 Ernie met Philip Docker and formed DockPort Ltd, a firm focused on new technology for the oyster aquaculture industry. DockPort has developed BOBR (Benefit Of Being Round) that is a revolutionary mechanized system for suspended oyster aquaculture. These products will go to market in early 2023.
