Topic
The Challenges of Directed Altruistic Living Kidney Donation
Description
Directed Altruistic Donation is when someone steps forward to donate a kidney to a specific person with whom they have no prior emotional relationship. This may happen through responding to an appeal in the media or on social media, for example.
In this webinar we hear from transplant surgeon Frank Dor about some of the ethical challenges this type of donation has brought for the professional transplant community and possible donors, as well as some of the potential pitfalls those thinking of appealing for a donor might like to consider.
We also hear from Sandie Shokar, who helped run a successful social media campaign for a living kidney donor ‘Hope for Anaya’ about some of the challenges they encountered and lessons they learnt along the journey.
In addition, we’ll hear from Lisa Burnapp of NHS Blood and Transplant who will offer some brief guidance as to how best to proceed if this is something you are considering.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions.
