AUPHA Annual Meeting: Doctoral Session - Keep Calm and Be A Mentor - Approaches to Ph.D. Student Mentoring
Mentoring has long been recognized as an important ingredient for nurturing successful Ph.D. students. Mentoring is especially important for helping Ph.D. students cultivate the resilience required to navigate and sustain motivation during the dissertation stage on their way to completing the degree. Yet, 'the science of mentoring' remains very anecdotal, due in part to its individualized nature and overshadowing by other training activities (e.g., didactic training, academic/dissertation advising). This session will use a combination of presentations by four panelists with Ph.D. mentoring experience and small group sessions to identify common challenges to mentoring Ph.D. students and approaches for overcoming these challenges.
