From Rhetoric to Reality: Country Perspectives on Reaching Universal Health Coverage
In 2015, world leaders committed to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This commitment was further affirmed during the United Nations High-Level Meeting on UHC in 2019 during which leaders committed to ensuring that all people have access to quality health services.

To monitor progress on these commitments, UHC2030 publishes a State of Commitment to UHC review that provides a multi-stakeholder overview of the status of UHC at country and global levels. The review is an important tool to support accountability processes within countries and globally.

In 2021, the Civil Society Engagement Mechanism for UHC2030 (CSEM) – in partnership with UNAIDS, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Save the Children, NCD Alliance, Living Goods, People’s Health Movement (PHM), APCASO, Global Health Council, and other country partners – conducted 19 focus groups as part of the State of the UHC Commitment multistakeholder review process to highlight the perspectives of civil society and communities.

This civil society-led event marking UHC Day 2021 will share the outcomes and recommendations from these consultations as well as key insights from the State of the UHC Commitment synthesis 2021 and new country profiles.

It will feature civil society and community advocates who participated in these consultations, as well as other UHC stakeholders who engaged in the multistakeholder review who will share their perspectives on the progress made toward UHC in their countries and at regional and global levels. The speakers will highlight priority areas for the global movement for UHC to amplify in the lead-up to the 2023 High Level Meeting on UHC.
