The Academy of Forensic Nursing is delighted to welcome back Christine Foote-Lucero and Katelyn Hook for this upcoming Member's Only AFN Webinar - Blunt Cerebrovascular Injury and Strangulation: Deconstructing Dissections on October 19, 2022 at 12:00 PM EST.
Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is a collective term used to describe blunt force injuries to the carotid and vertebral arteries. When left untreated, they are of high clinical significance because of their association with adverse neurologic events, including cerebral infarction and death. BCVI is relatively uncommon in strangulation injuries but may have devastating neurological outcomes. Early identification of BCVI is important, as treatment with antithrombotic therapy has been shown to reduce the incidence of postinjury ischemic stroke. This webinar will provide an introductory review of BCVI including the five grades, provide evidence based practice guidance on the care of patients diagnosed with BCVI, as well as review case studies of strangled patients with BCVI.
