The common mental health issues experienced by men include depression and anxiety and substance-related issues. The suicide rate for men is three times that of women.
Men face particular challenges in recognising these issues and there are barriers to seeking and accessing assistance. Men often present on several occasions before a mental health problem is identified. A high index of suspicion and a thorough assessment are vital.
There are many management tools to assist men, such as providing information, modifying lifestyle, engaging in meaningful activity and work, as well as cognitive-behavioural and other strategies. The key management strategies will be outlined in the presentation, and useful resources discussed.
Case discussion will illustrate the main issues, challenges and tools, which may help men and assist in prevention.
