(Nearly) hidden in plain sight: Lesser-known photographic histories and the Holocaust by Professor Michael Berkowitz
This presentation draws on work of I. J. Singer (interwar Warsaw) and Bernard Gotfryd (Radom ghetto) pertaining to their vocations in photography, also informed by fictional and autobiographical writings of Hans Keilson, Giselle Freund, Lotte Jacobi, and others. It integrates experiences that were specific to Jewish photographers in certain periods and cities, and sketches an overall sense of the Jewish engagement with photography, which is only beginning to emerge as a scholarly subject. It will also introduce reflections on Jews and photography in Lithuania, which is something of a family history for the author.
