Naming an Era: The Gilded Age as Novel and Nom de Guerre
Scholars and experts join in conversation to analyze and discuss the origins of the term “Gilded Age” as an era through Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner’s The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today (1873), the novel that first coined the phrase. While the fictional book is largely based in Tennessee and Washington, DC, it provides a contextual framework of the contemporary events and social structures that made for this late 19th century period in American history. This discussion is being co-presented by The Preservation Society of Newport County and The Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, Connecticut.
