"Saving God from Religion" by Robin Meyers (Natalie Perkins and Robin Meyers)
Longtime Westar scholar Robin Meyers, who recently appeared in the critically acclaimed documentary "American Heretics," has just published "Saving God from Religion," a major new book that is directly pertinent to the spirit and ideas of the God Seminar.
As pastor of the progressive Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ, a flourishing and high-profile congregation in Oklahoma featured in the acclaimed documentary "American Heretics," he has seen first-hand how people across political and theological spectrums have co-opted religion to present a god who shows favor to some and dispenses punishment to others according to right belief and correct behavior. But this transactional approach to a God “up there”—famously depicted by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel—no longer works, if it ever did, leaving an increasing number of Christians disappointed and hungry for ways to heal and transform our broken relationships and perishing planet.
Natalie Perkins of the Praxis Forum will guide Meyers through a discussion of the book.
