Topic
Georgia and the Butch
Description
FREE online dramatic readings from the letters between Georgia O'Keeffe and Maria Chabot, 1941-1949. Produced by the Southwest Harbor Public Library.
Who was the butch who took Georgia O'Keeffe camping in the mountains of New Mexico, who was her self-described "handyman," who was the designer/general contractor/builder for her internationally renowned house in Abiquiu-- and who never charged for her labor?
And why has she been written out of history?
Letters read by Ria T. DiLullo and Gael Schaefer. Narrated by Carolyn Gage.
SPECIAL GUEST: Zibby Wilder, the great-great niece of Maria Chabot, who is writing her biography! She will be joining us for the talk-back!

The author of nine collections of lesbian- and feminist-themed plays and seventy-five plays, musicals, and one-woman shows, she specializes in non-traditional roles for women, especially those reclaiming famous lesbians whose stories have been distorted or erased from history. Ria T. DiLullo (Maria Chabot ) My name is Ria T. DiLullo. To date, I have directed and produced over a dozen full length shows, led development on scores of new scripts, had my hand in a multitude of solo shows and short play festivals, as well as creating and producing video-based narratives. Gael Schaefer (Georgia O'Keeffe ) Counsellor-at-Law, A Wilder Christmas (The Peccadillo), Emma, I Come for Love (NYMF). Theatre: The Wedding Singer, Souvenir, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You, Moon Over Buffalo, Steel Magnolias. Film: Ripped!, Hooray for Mister Touchdown, Gladys Brown. TV: "Boardwalk Empire." Kate Pickup McMullin (Technical Director ) Kate Pickup McMullin directs the communications and technology for the Southwest Harbor Public Library. Kate ran tech direction for five of Carolyn Gage’s online productions including “The 2020 Lesbian Tent Revival,” “Artemisia & Hildegarde,” “Abolition: A Reading of Two Short Plays on Prostitution,” “Starpattern,” and “Georgia and the Butch,” and assisted with Gage’s “Lighting Martha,” a Constructive Outrage Production directed by Kathe Mull. A driving force behind the library’s annual Women’s History Month Exhibition and Programs since 2003, Kate is also engaged in the most terrifying undertaking of all, raising a teenage daughter. Zibby Wilder (great-grandniece of and authority about Maria Chabot ) I am a writer, digital storyteller, and consultant specializing in the research, creation, and implementation of engaging and accessible heritage communications and program initiatives. I am passionate about culture, heritage, history, and illuminating the importance of how the past influences the present–and the future. I am currently finishing up the draft of a book on the life of my great, great Aunt, Maria Chabot, and her curious friendship with the "Mother of American Modernism", Georgia O'Keeffe.
