The Graduate School Road Map
Description
Graduate school season is here and our team of Asian and Oceanian representatives at the IUBMB Trainee Initiative are set to host their first event and our first-ever roundtable discussion – The Graduate School Roadmap: A Roundtable Discussion.
The program features students who have graduated recently and are on their way to a successful research career in Biochemistry or a related field. In addition, there will also be distinguished professors who can provide information about supervision during graduate research, as well as, how a prospective graduate student can approach them regarding supervision.
In today's increasingly competitive world, the TI aims to support and inspire young Asian and Oceanian students with the knowledge and resources for a successful graduate school application and journey, eventually leading to a triumphant career in research.
Where to apply? How to apply? Who to talk to? Feeling overwhelmed?- Fret not! Drop in any questions or concerns you have regarding your graduate school application and your life after undergraduate studies below, and we will help you get answers, LIVE at this event!
Be sure to drop your questions to be answered in our google forum:

Currently, he is a Visiting Predoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch studying immunologic aspects of fetal membrane homeostasis and their role in parturition. He joined the Trainee Initiative to aid foster collaboration and cooperation among emerging researchers in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology, link opportunities for skills development and training to other scientists-in-training particularly in low- to middle-income countries, and help make scientific knowledge accessible to many people. Zainab Rafat Zainab is a master's student majoring in Biochemistry, born and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She is a passionate advocate for mental health and promoting women and girls in science. At her University, she started the AMU Biochemical Society, which fosters students' ambitions and passion for life science. She plans to study human diseases on a molecular level and look for new drug targets to treat these diseases. She is also interested in the study of neuropathic pain caused by spinal cord injury in professional athletes and hopes to develop non-addictive and better ways to treat their injuries. Furthermore, she has been working to create an inclusive environment and actively promote STEM careers for underprivileged groups in India. Osvaldo Contreras Osvaldo is a Postdoctoral Fellow expert in cell biology and a biomedical researcher studying tissue regeneration and homeostasis loss in mammals with a focus on the stromal compartment. He graduated from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in 2012. After completing his MSc degree, he received his PhD in cell and molecular biology in 2019. His PhD focused on tissue-resident fibro-adipogenic progenitor cell fate, plasticity, and heterogeneity in muscle regeneration and heart repair in Prof. Enrique Brandan’s Lab at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile with the co-supervision of Prof. Fabio Rossi at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. As a Postdoctoral Scientist, Dr Contreras works on stem cell-based strategies for improving our understanding of heart development and repair under the supervision of Prof. Richard Harvey at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and holds a Conjoint Lecturer position at UNSW Sydney, Faculty of Medicine and Health.
