In 2009, Massachusetts took the historic step of renaming an entire state agency with the transition from DMR to DDS. However, phrases such as 'mental retardation' and 'handicapped' still exist on many official state documents. Families and individuals still encounter these words, at times, during internet searches for services.
Katie's Law will help strike outdated and often hurtful language from state documents and promote the use of more appropriate, dignified alternatives.
In partnership with Lifeworks, MASS Advocates will be presented a self-advocate panel on Katie's Law on Monday, May 17th, from 4:00 pm-5:30 pm.
