Description: At the end of this course, attendees should be able to distinguish between the various keratotic lesions of the gingiva and palatal mucosa and have a deep understanding of the concept of leukoplakia in the molecular age. Current data supports the concept that leukoplakias even without evidence of cytologic dysplasia are nevertheless precancerous and must be managed as such. Desquamative gingivitis will also be discussed in detail from the point of view etiology, diagnosis and management.
• Distinguish between gingival reactive keratotic lesions and leukoplakia
• Recognize that leukoplakias do not have to show dysplasia to be precancerous
• Diagnose and manage patients with desquamative gingivitis
