"Exploited and At-Risk You in the Nation's Capital: Insights from the Clinic"
Katherine Deye, MD, is an attending child abuse pediatrician at Children’s National Hospital, where she is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the CAREs Clinic, which provides specialized, comprehensive, trauma-informed medical and mental health care to exploited and at-risk youth in the Nation’s Capital. In this talk, Dr. Deye gives an overview of the physical and mental health consequences of exploitation and describes how the CAREs Clinic staff focus on fostering youths’ decision-making and agency to act as an ally on their journey out of trafficking. Partnering with the dynamic DC Human Trafficking Multidisciplinary Team and other essential community-based service providers allows a well-coordinated, comprehensive response that is individually tailored to each youth’s needs. Finally, Dr. Deye discusses the challenges of identifying trafficked youth in the healthcare setting and some barriers encountered while providing care to these youth.
