Art Speaks: The Fascinating History of the "Reclining Pan"
In addition to being a compelling work of art, the "Reclining Pan" sculpture has led an interesting life shaped by influential people. The marble started out as part of a second-century Roman monument. Rediscovered in the Renaissance, an unknown sculptor in the orbit of Michelangelo fashioned the figure of Pan, which was later purchased by one of the most powerful popes of the baroque age. Centuries later, the pope’s heirs were allowed to sell the sculpture due to legislation enabled by Benito Mussolini.
