Abruzzo Masterclass with Sabatino di Properzio from LA VALENTINA
From a wine standpoint, Italy’s stunning Abruzzo region is synonymous with the country’s second most widely planted indigenous grape variety - Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Due to large-scale investment in bulk wine production in the region, lower-quality Abruzzo wines proliferated the US market for decades. Join us for a conversation with Sabatino di Properzio from LA VALENTINA as we discuss the shift to “quality over quantity” ethos that’s taking hold in the region.

About the winery: At La Valentina, brothers Sabatino, Andrea and Roberto di Properzio operate on a “quality over quantity” ethos in all aspects of their winemaking operation, and act as leading examples of a new generation of winemakers that are working to usher in a new chapter for the region. Founded in 1990, La Valentina believes that the grapes local to the region, such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, and Pecorino are perfectly suited to the land, and therefore do not cultivate or purchase any international varieties. The di Properzio brothers take sustainability seriously and avoid the use of artificial or chemical products - all estate vineyards already being farmed organically or undergoing conversion to organic viticulture. The winemaking philosophy at La Valentina is guided by minimal intervention techniques and the concepts that high-quality wine “has the mark of the vine on its grapes.”
