CAST: until learning has no limits and Center on Inclusive Technology & Education Systems logos
Understanding the Landscape of Special Education in Virtual Schools
The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent shift to emergency remote learning expedited a trend already underway, that is an upward movement toward more students attending virtual schooling. What does this mean for students with disabilities, especially those who use assistive technology or need accessible educational materials?

This session will discuss how students receiving special education services fare while learning remotely, including during recent emergency remote learning. We will explore the opportunities and challenges to providing a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in virtual settings. The session will also discuss the Center on Inclusive Technology & Education Systems (CITES) framework for implementing inclusive technology systems and how it might be applied to various models of virtual learning.
