The ecology of our oceans is a vast and complex topic. However, the seemingly simple “spineless” invertebrates play an integral role in keeping this delicate ecologic balance in check. Invertebrates provide amazing water filtration, serve as key food sources for terrestrial and aquatic animals alike, and provide humans with precious adornments. And to think that all of these above services are the result of just one species of mollusk, imagine what the other 50,000 plus species of invertebrates can deliver! The top vertebrate ocean predators may get all the cinematic glory, but the real superheroes are our invertebrates!
