Holly Willson Holladay and Erin Giannini in conversation - a virtual Boswell event
Boswell Book Company presents a special event featuring not one but two authors from Wayne State University's TV Milestones Series: Holly Willson Holladay, author of Parks and Recreation, and Erin Giannini, author of The Good Place.

Giannini's The Good Place is a light take on the darkly comic show and its lasting impact on American television culture. Giannini argues that the show redefines the classic sitcom structure by mixing the genres of fantasy and comedy. Giannini also analyzes the "not so in your face" political commentary seen in The Good Place, as this show took place during a tumultuous time in American politics.

Holladay's Parks and Recreation is an homage to the critically acclaimed, fan-favorite series and an exploration of how the show evolved as a traditional network sitcom in a post-network era. Through compelling analysis, Holladay untangles representations of women and BIPOC in the series as they engage with contemporary discourse surrounding media and identity politics.

Holly Willson Holladay is associate professor of media theory and criticism at Missouri State University. Her research about identity, popular media, and media audiences has been published in journals such as Journal of Fandom Studies, Feminist Media Studies, the Journal of Popular Culture, and in various edited collections.

Erin Giannini is an independent scholar in television studies and has served as an editor for PopMatters. Her articles have appeared in numerous journals, including Monstrum, Slayage, and Science Fiction Film and Television, and she is a member of the Southwest Popular/American Culture Association.
