Dr. Marcos Vargas - One Shade or Multi Shade Resin Composites? Is Shade Selection Outdated?

Dental manufacturers claim to have developed new materials that match the shade and appearance of natural teeth with one shade, or with a limited range of shades. This presentation will provide clinical evidence in favor and in contrast to those claims. Limitations, advantages, indications, their clinical utilization, and tips for use will be presented with the purpose of maximize their utilization and maximize esthetic results.

Learning objectives:
- Provide a description and characterization of these materials.
- Provide a clinical protocol for their utilization.
- Provide indications for one shade and limited range of resin composites.

Dr. Marcos Vargas
Dr. Vargas received his DDS from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru in 1985. He attended a 2-year AEGD program with emphasis on restorative dentistry at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, New York. He received a Certificate in Operative Dentistry and Master of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1994. Currently, Dr. Vargas is a professor in the Department of Family Dentistry at the University of Iowa. He teaches undergraduate and graduate students and has published extensively in the areas of dental materials, adhesion, resin composites, and ceramics. He participates extensively in continuing education, nationally and internationally. Dr. Vargas maintains a private practice limited to restorative dentistry with emphasis in esthetic dentistry.
