5-Day Leadership Institute
Guest Speaker: Dr. Dawn Brooks DeCosta
Description: Join award-winning NYC school principal, Dawn Brooks DeCosta, Ed.D. as she leads you through Culturally Responsive & Affirming Social-Emotional Leadership (CRASEL). This institute is appropriate for all leaders who are seeking to go beyond the definitional work of “trauma-informed” and “cultural-relevance”. In this 12.5-hour course over 5 days, participants will engage in the following units of study:

Day 1
Session 1: Self Awareness, Self-Care and a Racial Reflection

Day 2
Session 2: Using Research Based Practices in CRSE and SEL

Day 3
Session 3: Cultivating a CRASEL Team & Creating a Vision for Racial Equity

Day 4
Session 4: Social Justice and a Mindful School Culture

Day 5
Session 5: Multidimensional Principal Performance Rubric & The Standards for Leadership Practice Crosswalk

Dr. Dawn Brooks DeCosta, Ed.D.
Principal @Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School (TMALS)
Dr. Dawn Brooks DeCosta, EdD in Educational Leadership, Teachers College, Columbia University, M.S. in Fine Art Education, Queens College; B.S. in Education, St. John’s University. Dawn has served 27 years in NYC DOE with NYC and as Principal of Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School (TMALS) for the past 9 years.Dawn’s dissertation research is entitled, “Black Principal Perspectives on SEL and CRSL in Urban Schools: The Role of Beliefs, Values and Leadership Practices. Dawn has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work such as Teacher of the Year 1998, Heroes of Education Award 2002 for her work with students involving the 9/11 tragedy (highlighted in CNN’s, “Through a Child’s Eyes”), and Outstanding Educator 2002. She is a 2015 Marvin Mauer Spotlight Award winner through her work with Yale Institute and the RULER Approach for Emotional Intelligence and a 2020 Lois Mailou Jones Art Education Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
