Challenges of Indonesia Energy Sector Long Term Strategy

Indonesia has submitted its LTS document to UNFCCC in November 2021. The document indicates that Indonesia will still have residual emission of 540 million tons in 2050 but has the potential to reach net zero carbon emission in 2060 or sooner. Since the launching of the LTS, there has been many discussions related to decarbonization and net-zero emission in various sectors, including energy sector, which is one of the large GHG emitter in Indonesia. Practically all relevant stakeholders i.e., the government, private sector, academic and NGO have been active in discussing the decarbonization or net zero issues. With this background, the Center for Research, in cooperation with IDDRI France and with partnership with CCROM IPB and Environmental Institute plan to conduct Focus Group Discussion on Indonesia Decarbonization Endeavour in Energy Sector.

The objective of the FGD is to obtain perspective and create a shared understanding among academics/scientists regarding various aspects of Indonesia LTS including: envisioned socio-economic transformation and structural changes needed, key assumptions, key and supporting policy, near-term policy and actions required to support transformation, investment size, financing schemes, technology development and R&D needed, and overall challenges in implementing energy sector LTS. The expert discussion will seek to collect diverse expert perspectives based on the research done under different long-term energy - GHG emission projection exercises, including LTS & LCDI visions and forthcoming IEA Roadmap.
