John Tateishi
At age three, John Tateishi left his home in Los Angeles with his family, forced by the US Army into prisons along with the entire West Coast Japanese American population during WWII. In 1978, John launched the JACL's redress campaign and developed the strategies, often controversial, that ultimately led to the successful conclusion with the signing of the Civil Liberties Act by Ronald Reagan. Redress is an intimate look at the ways in which cultural inhibitions and a strong sense of honor led to silence by the Nisei until a strategy suggested by Daniel Inouye drove the campaign into the heart of the community and ultimately brought vindication for AJAs.
