The coastal city of Recife, capital of the State of Pernambuco, is the most developed city in Northeastern Brazil. A vibrant metropolis, It has been the scenery for many events in Brazil’s history, with a special place in the history of Jews in the Americas. During our tour,
we will visit Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, the first synagogue in the New World, which today serves as a museum; tour the Street of the Jews; and learn about the history and present state of the Jewish community in Brazil.
Our Guide Marcos Gandelsman, a Recife native, is a Jewish Studies Teacher and coordinator in the community elementary school. He is also a community organizer involved with Judaic Tourism, a social project and a network connecting local Jewish communities in Latin America with their own heritage and with Jewish communities around the world.
